The Green Award Foundation Monday announced that Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement S.A. (TCM) has expanded its Green Award certification with its newest vessel, the Aframax tanker Elias Tsakos.

The vessel, which was delivered at the end of June, is said to be the first of the nine newbuildings slated to be delivered to TCM throughout 2016 and 2017.

TCM says it aims to enroll all nine of its newbuildings in the Green Award programme, which will see an onboard survey conducted on each of the vessels to assess if the vessels meet the Green Award requirements.

Elias Tsakos' onboard survey is noted to have been completed on July 24 in Kårstø, Norway, meeting the survey requirements and becoming TCM's fifth oil tanker to be certified by Green Award.

"At Green Award, we praise the intentions shown by Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement to enroll additional 9 ships to Green Award certification," said Jan Fransen, Executive Director of the Green Award Foundation.

"Greek shipping has been with the Green Award programme from the beginning and their commitment has certainly grown over the years. We congratulate the Greek shipping industry for their success and certainly encourage them for continued commitment to sustainability."

In June, Bureau Veritas S.A. (BV) announced that its fuel monitoring programme, VeriFuel, would become an incentive provider under the Green Award programme.
