The European Commission unveiled its Arctic Strategy on Tuesday, outlining plans to strengthen maritime security, address climate change and support sustainable economic development as new shipping routes reshape the region.

The strategy includes plans for a Maritime Security Hub to monitor activity in Arctic waters, protect subsea cables and track shadow fleet vessels, the EC said in an announcement yesterday.

The EU also aims to expand icebreaker capacity and strengthen transport links with the region.

The Clean Arctic Alliance welcomed the strategy and urged the EU to back mandatory IMO rules on black carbon emissions from shipping.

Dr Sian Prior, lead advisor to the alliance, said a proposal led by Denmark and Greenland to restrict ships to cleaner fuels in Arctic waters was timely.

Co-sponsored by Germany, France and the Solomon Islands, the proposal is due to be considered at the IMO's Pollution Prevention and Response Committee meeting in January 2027.

The alliance also called on Canada, Iceland and Norway to support the proposed measures.
