A tanker was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to a British government agency monitoring maritime security in the region.

The incident was reported at 17:30 UTC on Tuesday off the coast of Khasab, Oman, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said in a social media update today.

The latest incident comes at a time when Iran and Oman are discussing a framework to jointly manage shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The countries are working on plans to come up with a joint temporary maritime corridor.

“Local authorities have reported that a tanker has been hit by an unknown projectile, causing fire to the vessel, which has since been extinguished,” UKMTO said in the post.

“All crew are reported as safe and accounted for and there has been no report of environmental impact.”
