Iran and Oman are in talks to establish a temporary joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz to support safer vessel navigation, according to a joint press statement issued on Tuesday.

The proposal was discussed during Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi’s visit to Iran, where he met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as per the press statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The framework would include arrangements for safe navigation, maritime traffic management and information exchange, as well as related maritime and security services.

The two countries also stressed the importance of dialogue with other Persian Gulf states and respect for international law and the sovereign rights of coastal countries.

The latest talks follow Oman’s move in June to establish an alternative shipping corridor through the Strait in coordination with the IMO.

Iran subsequently warned commercial vessels against using the route, saying it had not been consulted on its establishment. Some ships using the route were attacked, forcing the IMO to pause the transit plan.
