Furetank to Add LBM-Fuelled Tanker to Fleet
Swedish tanker owner Furetank is set to add a tanker capable of running on liquid biomethane (LBM) to its Swedish-flagged fleet at a naming ceremony in Uddevalla on August 28.
The vessel Fure Vasa is the 18th unit in Furetank’s VINGA vessel series, developed by FKAB Marine Design, the firm said in a press release on Thursday.
The companies have collaborated on vessel design for 40 years.
Fure Vasa is owned through Furebear, a joint venture between Furetank and Canadian shipping company Algoma Central Corporation.
The tanker will operate primarily on LBM within the EU and is equipped for shore power during port operations.
LNG dual-fuel ships can run on bio-LNG or LBM as well as conventional LNG.
These fuels can offer lower emissions than conventional LBM, helping shipowners reduce their carbon footprint as regulations tighten.
The VINGA series has 22 vessels ordered to date, with the design focused on reducing energy consumption and emissions.
Furetank also plans to make an additional announcement affecting the Swedish merchant fleet during the ceremony.
