New Customs Regs Could Hit Piraeus Bunker Demand
Tuesday November 22, 2016
New customs regulations at Greek ports may affect bunker sales at Piraeus, according to a report by Platts.
The new rule requires that ships calling the port either show their charter party prior to bunkering or pay tax on bunkers.
However, ships working cargo are not included under the rule - and that is reported to account for about three-quarters of Piraeus' bunker demand.
For those vessels, "a declaration from the ship's agent is enough," said one Piraeus-based bunker trader.
However, calls for bunkers only would be affected, and it was feared that this could still result in an overall decline in demand.
