Port of Skagen Awards Shore Power Contract to PowerCon
Denmark’s Port of Skagen has selected PowerCon to build a new shore power facility for cruise ships at Quay 9.
The 16 MW facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2027 and begin operations in the 2028 cruise season, Port of Skagen said in a LinkedIn post on June 10.
Once completed, it will allow cruise ships to connect to onshore electricity and switch off their diesel generators while berthed, reducing emissions and noise.
Many ports have developed facilities to help ships connect to onshore electricity.
While the technology helps reduce local emissions, wider decarbonisation of shipping will still require significant investment in alternative marine fuels.
The climate benefit of shore power also depends on whether the electricity supplied is generated from renewable sources.
The DKK 85 million project will feature an integrated energy chain system and a fully electric cable management system to improve safety and efficiency on the quay.
Norwegian company Plug – Shore Power contributed to the project’s design.
Construction is expected to take around 18 months and will include electrical upgrades, underground cabling and new transformer stations.
