Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub (Decarb Hub) and the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping have launched new tools to help shipowners prepare for the safe use of ammonia as a marine fuel.

The resources include an Ammonia Process Safety Management (PSM) Maturity Self-Assessment Tool and three competency and training handbooks, the Decarb Hub said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

The PSM tool uses a five-tier maturity scale to help operators identify gaps in their safety management practices and track improvements.

It draws on process safety practices from industries such as chemical processing and oil and gas, where ammonia-related hazards are already managed.

The three handbooks cover emergency response, maintenance, and leak detection, management, isolation and repair.

They set out competency and training requirements for seafarers, vessel managers, terminal personnel, shore support teams and emergency responders.

The partners said ammonia’s toxicity creates additional safety challenges that need to be managed throughout a vessel’s operating life.

The resources are available free of charge and build on the partners’ previous work on ammonia competencies and training.
