Peninsula Vessel Joins EMSA Oil Spill Response Network
Marine fuel supplier and trading firm Peninsula has secured a four-year contract with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), with its oil tanker joining the agency’s oil spill response network in the Canary Islands.
The vessel, Panama 100, will continue its normal commercial operations while remaining available for deployment when required, Peninsula said in a press release on Thursday.
Preparing the tanker involved modifications, specialist pollution-response equipment and crew training, including level 2 anti-pollution training with the Canary Islands Port Authority.
If mobilised following an oil spill, the Panama 100 will help authorities contain and recover pollutants using skimmers and containment systems.
“We have worked to ensure that both the PANAMA 100 and her crew are properly equipped and trained for the responsibility that comes with this role,” Matias Martin, deputy company security officer at Peninsula, said.
The vessel and its crew will continue to take part in drills and exercises throughout the four-year agreement to maintain their readiness.
