Exmar Takes Delivery of First Oceangoing Ammonia-Fuelled Ship
Maritime transportation firm Exmar has taken delivery of the world’s first oceangoing vessel capable of running on ammonia.
The midsize gas carrier, Antwerpen, can transport up to 46,000 m3 of ammonia or LPG and is equipped with a dual-fuel ammonia engine, the firm said in a statement on its website on Wednesday.
Ship & Bunker had reported in April that the vessel was launched by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in April.
EXMAR said the vessel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional ships and exceeds current IMO emissions reduction targets.
With ammonia engines now becoming commercially available and shipowners beginning to order vessels, the industry is gradually moving to embrace the fuel.
However, significant work remains to develop bunkering infrastructure, as ammonia is toxic and requires strict safety precautions.
The vessel is the first of the series of four ammonia-fuelled ships.
“This achievement reflects collective expertise and our commitment to drive sustainable shipping forward,” Carl-Antoine Saverys, CEO of Exmar Group, said.
