The IMO Council has recommended a second term for Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, extending his mandate through 2031.

The Council has recommended that the IMO Assembly approve a four-year extension from January 1, 2028, to December 31, 2031, according to an IMO social media post on Wednesday.

Dominguez took office in January 2024 for an initial four-year term, which is due to expire at the end of 2027.

The proposed extension would keep him in the role until the end of 2031.

The recommendation follows the Council's 138th session in London, being held from November 2-6.

Dominguez's second term would coincide with a critical period for the shipping industry, as the IMO continues work on the Net-Zero Framework.
