A "strong smell of fuel" was reported after a 266,000 tonne bulk carrier Stellar Daisy disappeared off the coast of Uruguay, Australian media reports.

The National Navy of Uruguay says an oil slick found 3,700 km off the country's coast suggests that the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel has sunk.

Two crew members are said to have been found on a life raft on Saturday, and a search is reported to be continuing for the vessel's remaining 22 crew members.

While cause of the vessel's disappearance is still unknown, one Singapore-based marine surveyor has told Platts that VLOCs can be vulnerable to "stability stress."

Stellar Daisy is reported to have been transporting iron ore from Rio de Janeiro to China at the time it disappeared.
