ESL Shipping Ltd. (ESL Shipping) has announced that its newbuild 26,000 DWT liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered dry cargo vessel Viikki has was launched at the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China on August 31.

Viikki is said to be the first LNG-powered handyzise bulk carrier in the world and "a forerunner" in both energy efficiency and eco-friendliness

"The longstanding work in this project becomes concrete today when we see the vessel floating for the first time," said Captain Jussi Vaahtikari of ESL Shipping.

"There is still a lot of work ahead before her delivery, but I'm confident that we will get a superb vessel tailored to our needs."

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the 160 metre vessel is said to produce over 50 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions than vessels of the previous generation.

Viikki is set to begin operation in the Baltic Sea during the first half of 2018, and will be followed by a sister vessel, which is currently under construction and is slated to be christened this month.
