A joint maritime industry group has released two frameworks to improve the digital exchange of vessel operational and emissions data between shipping companies and service providers.

The Tripartite Joint Industry Working Group (JIWG), chaired by BIMCO, published version 1.0 of the Operational Vessel Data (OVD) and Vessel Emissions Reporting (VER) frameworks, as per an emailed statement on Tuesday.

OVD standardises the format for sharing vessel operational and fuel-consumption data, while VER provides a common format for exchanging emissions information and its verification status.

The voluntary frameworks do not introduce new reporting requirements. Instead, they aim to reduce repeated data entry and improve consistency across systems used for the IMO Data Collection System (DCS) and the EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system.

“The maritime industry does not need more ways of exchanging the same information,” Jeppe Skovbakke Juhl, BIMCO’s chief naval architect for regulatory affairs and JIWG chair, said.

“It needs a common approach that allows data to move efficiently between organisations and systems.”

The group will assess options for independent governance and gather feedback from practical use.

An update is due at the Tripartite meeting in Tokyo on October 28.
