Nel ASA (Nel Hydrogen) has announced the launch of Hyon AS (Hyon), its joint venture with Hexagon Composites ASA (Hexagon) and PowerCell Sweden AB (PowerCell), aimed at the development of integrated hydrogen projects, including those that focus on maritime transport.

As Ship & Bunker reported in April, the equally owned joint venture is set to initially focus on opportunities within the maritime and marine segments, as well as projects to capture stranded renewable energy.

"The Scandinavian market is ready for hydrogen and fuel cell technology, especially the maritime industry from which we have already received a number of project requests," said Tomas Tronstad, Managing Director of Hyon.

Arild Eiken, Hyon's Marine Technology Director, commenting on the new company, said: "Hyon's solutions will be interesting for several maritime segments, as examples; cruise, offshore, and ferry companies requiring clean renewable energy and silent power generation."

In January, PowerCell announced that, along with fellow members of the MARANDA consortium, it had been granted funding from the European Union (EU) for the development of a fuel cell system for marine applications, which will be based on the company's PowerCell S3.
