A Carnival Cruise Line’s cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee, has bunkered LNG for the first time at Roatan, Honduras.

This marked the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering at Roatan, Francesco Scarso, senior first engineer/LNG engineer at Carnival Cruise Line, said in his LinkedIn post last week.

"I recently acted as the Person in Charge (PIC) for the inaugural Ship-to-Ship (STS) LNG bunkering operation ever to take place in Roatán, Honduras—fueling Carnival Cruise Line's beautiful LNG-powered flagship, the Carnival Jubilee, he said.

“Executing a cryogenic transfer for an Excel-class vessel in a brand-new location brings immense responsibility.

"From coordinating with port authorities to managing strict safety zones, ensuring ESD link integration, the operation required total focus and zero room for error."

While LNG is becoming a more widely available alternative marine fuel than options such as methanol or ammonia, these vessels may still need to transition to lower-carbon fuels such as bio-LNG as emissions rules tighten.

Bio-LNG can be used as a drop-in fuel in LNG-fuelled ships.
