WinGD Ammonia-Fuelled Engine Orderbook Tops 30 Units
Swiss marine engine maker WinGD has completed another factory acceptance test (FAT) for its ammonia-fuelled two-stroke engine platform as its ammonia engine orderbook surpassed 30 units.
The dual-fuel ammonia engine built by China-based Yuchai Marine Power underwent testing in April under the supervision of China Classification Society, WinGD said in an email statement on Thursday.
The engine is set to power the first vessel in a series of four 25,000 m3 LPG/ammonia carriers being built by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited for Tianjin Southwest Maritime.
WinGD said the tests demonstrated stable performance and favourable emissions results, with significantly lower NOx emissions during ammonia operation and minimal N2O emissions.
The company said its ammonia engine orders now cover multiple vessel segments including gas carriers, bulkers, tankers and container ships.
Ammonia is increasingly seen as a promising low-carbon marine fuel, but its adoption is constrained by limited fuel availability, safety and toxicity concerns, and the need for dedicated bunkering infrastructure.
