The Panama Canal has postponed a planned draft cut for ships using the Neopanamax Locks that was expected to take effect on October 1.

The maximum authorised draft limit will remain at 14.63 m (48 feet) tropical fresh water, instead of being reduced to 14.48 m (47.5 feet) as previously announced, the Panama Canal Authority said in an announcement on Friday.

It said the decision followed a review of Gatun Lake levels and the latest weather forecasts.

The move gives shipowners and operators more certainty when planning voyages through the canal.

The Canal Authority will continue to monitor water conditions and provide advance notice of any future changes to draft limits.

Meanwhile, the previously announced reductions in daily transit slots at the Neopanamax and Panamax locks remain in place. The Canal reduced transit slots from September 3, with a further cut at the Panamax lock taking effect on September 15.
