Debunkering of Stricken Bulk Carrier Begins
Mexico's Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) says that 150 cubic meters (cbm) of oil was debunkered from the stranded Mexican-flagged bulk carrier Los Llanitos over the weekend and transferred to a Panamanian tank barge.
In preparation for the bulk carrier to be scuttled, operations are now said to be centred on removing of about 11,484 liters of oil, 489 cbm of diesel, as well as other contaminants onboard the ship.
After safety checks and continued monitoring, authorities say that there has still been no reports of a bunker spill since the vessel's grounding on the rocks near Barra de Navidad in October.
Last week Ship & Bunker noted that there had been conflicting reports as to whether the incident had resulted in a bunker spill.
