US-Based Fleetzero's Marine Battery System Receives ABS Approval
Houston-based Fleetzero has received classification approval for its marine battery energy storage system from classification society ABS.
The product design assessment approval covers the company’s Leviathan lithium iron phosphate battery system, which is designed for use on vessels, ABS said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.
The system can operate at up to 1,000 VDC and has an IP67 rating.
Its modular, containerised design allows it to be deployed across different vessel types.
The first commercial deployment is expected later this year, with 10 MWh of battery capacity to be used as part of a vessel’s conversion to hybrid-electric propulsion.
“The maritime industry needs proven, class-approved energy storage that is built on a safe, scalable chemistry,” Steven Henderson, CEO of Fleetzero, said.
“The Leviathan delivers exactly that, and we are putting it to work immediately.”
ABS said the approval supports the safe deployment of new battery technology in marine applications.
