Emvolon Wins Massachusetts Grant for Biomethanol Technology
Technology company Emvolon has secured a grant under the Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2) programme.
The funding will help commercialise its modular technology that converts methane into biomethanol at the source of emissions, the company said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.
Emvolon, an MIT spin-off, uses engines as modular chemical plants to turn methane from sources such as landfills, farms and industrial sites into fuels including methanol and ammonia.
The company said methanol could help cut emissions in hard-to-abate sectors including shipping and aviation.
Emvolon also said the project could support sustainability initiatives at Logan International Airport and the Port of Boston through locally produced green fuels.
In 2024, the company signed deals to sell biomethanol to customers including shipping firms.
