Deployable Energy Partners with Hornbeck Offshore on Maritime Nuclear Battery
US-based nuclear firm Deployable Energy and Hornbeck Offshore have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop maritime applications for Deployable Energy's nuclear battery.
The partnership will cover offshore vessels and platforms, inland waterways, autonomous vessels, power barges and floating data centres, Deployable Energy said in a press release on Tuesday.
A joint working group will study vessel integration, licensing, financing, costs and commercial models, initially focusing on US applications.
The 1 MWe transportable microreactor is designed for vessel integration and can operate for more than five years between refuelling, according to Deployable Energy.
Hornbeck has also made a strategic investment in Deployable Energy.
Any deployment will depend on technical, commercial and regulatory approvals.
“We are proud to partner with one of the leaders in the US maritime sector and one of the largest Jones Act vessel owners to usher in a commercial maritime nuclear industry,” Bobby Gallagher, CEO and Co-Founder of Deployable Energy, said.
