Panama Reports Another Month of Year-on-Year Bunker Sales Growth
The latest data from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) shows another strong month of bunker sales for the month August, at 2,217,923.28 barrels, or about 305,000 metric tonnes (mt) in total for all products.
The Pacific coast saw sales of 1,804,312.17 barrels (about 248,000 mt), with the remaining 413,611.11 barrels (about 56,900 mt) sold on the Atlantic coast.
The sales volume represents a healthy 36.8 percent year-on-year increase over August 2014's sales of 1,620,877.11 barrels (about 223,000 mt) although the total was down slightly on the 2,253,850.87 barrels (about 310,000 mt) sold last month.
However it has been suggested that the sales volume data in previous years has been underrepresented, with a local player last month telling Ship & Bunker that the jump in official data might be down to an improvement in data collection as the actual volume sold appears to have remained fairly steady.
Last week the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said the opening of the county's expanded canal would not be delayed after the discovery of a crack in one of the new locks.
