The Port Authority of Valencia has launched a tender for a new electrical substation to strengthen power supply and support shore power infrastructure.

The project, authorised by the Spanish Council of Ministers, is expected to cost €18.7 million, with funding support from the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility.

The substation will have a shared available capacity of 40 MW to 90 MW with the existing ST1 facility, depending on the incoming power connection. Construction is expected to take 20 months.

The additional capacity will support cargo terminals, logistics infrastructure and onshore power supply (OPS) systems, allowing berthed vessels to switch off auxiliary engines and reduce emissions and noise.

The second substation will also improve power supply reliability, helping maintain critical operations, including cranes and refrigerated containers, during outages or maintenance.
