The world’s largest battery-electric ferry has entered commercial service in South America, powered by a battery system supplied by Corvus Energy.
The China Zorrilla, built by shipbuilder Incat Tasmania for Uruguayan ferry operator Buquebus, has more than 41 MWh of battery capacity installed onboard, Corvus Energy said in an announcement on Wednesday.
Ship & Bunker had reported in August that the China Zorrilla had departed for South America following the completion of construction.
The vessel can carry more than 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the Río de la Plata, connecting Argentina and Uruguay.
Corvus Energy was selected by Wartsila to supply the energy storage system around three years ago.
The vessel can sail for 1.5 hours on battery only.
