The Panama Canal will lower the maximum draft limit for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks to 48 feet (14.63 m) from August 26.

The limit will fall again to 47.5 feet (14.48 m) from September 3, the Panama Canal Authority said in an announcement on August 5.

The changes are being made in response to water levels and expected conditions in Gatun Lake.

"The measure is based on current water levels and projected conditions for the upcoming weeks in Gatun Lake," the canal authority said.

"It is part of the canal’s ongoing water management and operational strategy aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of its operations."

The authority said the draft cuts will not affect the number of vessels allowed to transit each day.

They are part of water conservation measures introduced ahead of the 2026 dry season.

This will be the fourth and fifth draft adjustments announced by the canal authority.

It said it will continue to monitor weather and water conditions before deciding on any further changes.
