Container shipping company APL says it has won an annual award for clean air efforts for the second year running.

The company was given the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) Air Quality Award, presented by the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, to recognize its use of air quality improvement technology including a seawater scrubber used by the APL England.

"The selection of APL as the 2013 recipient of the CAAP Air Quality Award is a meaningful acknowledgement of our efforts and contributions in developing effective environmental solutions," said APL Regional President for the Americas Gene Seroka.

"This award is further evidence of our vision and commitment to our customers, vendors and industry peers."

The company said it is on course to reduce carbon emissions 30 percent from a 2009 baseline by 2015.

In April, the APL Yangshan won the Green Ship of the Year award presented at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)'s International Marine Awards for its fuel-saving features and ballast water treatment system.

APL's parent company, Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines Limited (NOL), has also said that fuel-efficient vessels have helped it improve its bottom line.
