The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) say they have "averted a major environmental disaster" by successfully containing an oil spill at the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) following a vessel sinking on Sunday.

The 'Al Husaini' was reported to have been berthed in the port since April 8th.

Am ICG press release said that their Pollution Response Team (West) had commenced oil mopping operations as well as deploying some 100 metres of oil containment booms to contain the spill, which has so far been prevented from crossing into the Arabian Sea.

"Six to seven tons of oily water mixture has already been recovered," it said.

An ICG team is continuously monitoring the situation with equipment and manpower stationed at the spill site, they said.
