Seven Japanese companies plan to develop an ammonia bunkering network in the Chubu region and build four ammonia-fuelled car carriers, scheduled for completion in 2030.
The project involves Imabari Shipbuilding, K Line, Kyokuyo Shipyard, JERA, Shin Kurushima Dockyard, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Nihon Shipyard, according to a press release issued today.
JERA will procure green ammonia, including supplies from India, and develop loading facilities near its Hekinan Thermal Power Station.
In 2024, the company carried out truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering of a tugboat.
NYK and K Line will each introduce two ammonia-fuelled car carriers, which are expected to transport vehicles for customers including Toyota Motor Corporation.
The vessels will have dual-fuel engines and sufficient fuel capacity for trans-Pacific voyages using ammonia alone.
Kyokuyo Shipyard will build the dedicated ammonia bunkering vessel.
NYK and K Line will also establish an equally owned joint venture to sell and supply ammonia through ship-to-ship bunkering, primarily at Nagoya and Mikawa ports.
