Japanese Vessel Completes First Voyage Using Hydrogen-Fired Engine
A Japanese vessel has completed its first demonstration voyage using a hydrogen-fired engine under a zero-emission ship project run by the Nippon Foundation.
The 4,500 GT vessel, Kikou Maru, sailed about 33 km in Osaka Bay on September 25, using its hydrogen-fired engine for around two hours, the Nippon Foundation said in a press release on Wednesday.
The vessel was developed by a consortium led by Yanmar Power Solutions as part of the foundation's project to develop zero-emission vessels for Japan's domestic shipping sector.
Yanmar Power Solutions developed the hydrogen-fired engine and related equipment, while Ueno TransTech handled the vessel's retrofit and crew training.
The Nippon Foundation said the demonstration reduced CO2 emissions by about 1.2 tonnes compared with conventional fossil fuels.
