Ship management firm Dockendale and marine fuels specialist Green Marine have partnered to train seafarers in India on alternative marine fuels.

Dockendale Training Academy in Mumbai will deliver Green Marine’s courses on methanol, ethanol, ammonia and hydrogen as marine fuels, Green Marine said in a press release on Friday.

The training will cover the knowledge and skills needed to operate vessels using these fuels safely.

It will be available to officers, engineers and other maritime professionals as shipowners explore alternatives to conventional marine fuels.

Green Marine said existing seafarer training had not kept pace with the adoption of alternative fuels, with courses developed under the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) largely focused on LNG.

The company’s curriculum is developed and updated by captains and chief engineers with practical experience of alternative fuel technologies and vessel design.

“Having been involved in ordering the first methanol dual-fuel engine and operating the technology since 2016, I’ve seen firsthand that crew training hasn’t kept pace, and what exists under the IGF code is built mainly around LNG,” Fredrik Stubner, Group CEO of Green Marine, said.
