Japanese shipbuilder Tsuneishi Group’s Zhoushan unit has delivered its second dual-fuel methanol-fuelled container ship.

The 5,900 TEU container ship is fitted with dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol and conventional marine fuels, the company said in a statement on its website on Friday.

Tsuneishi has not mentioned the owner of the vessel, but it appears to be A.P Moller Maersk.

Methanol is seen as one of the more practical alternative fuels because it can be handled using relatively familiar infrastructure compared with some other emerging marine fuels.

The container segment has led orders for methanol-fuelled newbuilds.

“As international environmental regulations continue to tighten, demand for alternative-fuelled vessels is expected to expand further, the company said.

“TZS will continue to develop and construct vessels that combine environmental performance, safety and operational reliability, contributing to the realisation of sustainable maritime transport.”
