CMB.TECH's First Ammonia-Fuelled Bulker Begins Maiden Voyage to Australia
Belgium-based maritime group CMB.TECH’s first ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier has begun its maiden voyage to Australia.
The vessel, Mineral Europa, is described as the world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk vessel, the firm said in a LinkedIn post on Friday.
Its entry into service marks another step in the deployment of ammonia as a marine fuel.
Earlier this year, Exmar introduced an ammonia-fuelled oceangoing gas carrier, making Mineral Europa the first ammonia-powered vessel in the dry bulk segment.
CMB.TECH said the vessel was the result of almost a decade of development work as the company seeks to expand the use of ammonia in shipping.
The company expects 21 ammonia-powered vessels to join its fleet by 2029. This includes 18 dry bulk carriers, one container vessel and two chemical tankers.
Most of these ships are expected to be delivered within the next nine months.
“Mineral Europa is the first of its kind, but many more will follow in the months and years ahead,” Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, said.
