NYK Line Prepares Sixth Transition Bond Issue to Support Decarbonisation
Japanese shipping firm NYK Line plans to issue its sixth transition bond in June 2026 as part of efforts to advance shipping decarbonisation.
The proceeds from the bonds will support projects tied to its medium-term management plan, including investments in LNG-fuelled vessels, NYK Line said in a press release on Monday.
The funding will also back other initiatives linked to its long-term vessel fuel transition strategy toward 2050.
The company had launched its first LNG-fuelled in 2016 and plans to scale up investment in LNG through 2030, before gradually moving to ammonia-fuelled ships.
NYK said the issuance builds on its sustainable finance activities, having launched the shipping industry’s first green bonds in 2018 and Japan’s first transition bonds in 2021.
Further details including the bond size and maturity will be announced later. The bonds are scheduled for issuance in early June 2026.
The transition bond framework received a second-party opinion from DNV Business Assurance Japan K.K.
