Hong Kong-based shipping company Wah Kwong has taken delivery of an LR2 tanker suitable for conversion to LNG propulsion.

The 114,000 DWT vessel, Frontier Venture, has been built at Hengli Shipyard in China and classed by Bureau Veritas, Wah Kwong said in a press release on its website on Tuesday.

In addition to its LNG-ready capability, the tanker meets EEDI Phase III requirements and features digitalised systems under Bureau Veritas’ SMART notation, aimed at improving energy efficiency and operational performance.

The delivery marks the first in a series of SMART-enabled vessels planned by Wah Kwong, reflecting a broader strategy to integrate digitalisation and future fuel readiness across its fleet.

LNG is composed primarily of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, which can undermine its overall emissions advantage versus conventional marine fuels.

Bio-LNG offers a lower-carbon alternative and can be used as a drop-in fuel in existing dual-fuel LNG vessels, potentially improving lifecycle emissions performance as supply scales.
