Swedish marine propulsion company Berg Propulsion will supply propulsion technology and systems for two electric harbour tugs being built under India’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP).

The vessels are under construction at Mumbai-based KMEW Group for India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and are due for delivery in Q4 2027, Berg said in an email statement on Monday.

Designed by Navnautik, the 33.55 m tugs will use lithium-titanium-oxide batteries with dual diesel gensets for backup power and will each deliver 60 tonnes of bollard pull.

The GTTP aims to deploy 50 tugs powered by electric, hydrogen or methanol across India’s major ports by 2030.

"Berg will also handle all aspects of end-to-end project management through newly appointed Prasenjit Roy, Business Developer (India), Berg Propulsion, based in Kolkata, who will oversee commissioning and installation," the company said.
