Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has taken delivery of an LNG dual-fuel coal carrier fitted with a wind propulsion system.
Built by Oshima Shipbuilding for Kansai Electric Power, the 95,311 DWT Maizuru Kazenomai will transport coal to the utility’s Maizuru Power Plant, MOL said in a press release on Wednesday.
The vessel is Japan’s first coal carrier equipped with MOL’s Wind Challenger hard sail system, developed jointly with Oshima Shipbuilding.
The combination of LNG dual-fuel propulsion and wind assistance is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30% compared with conventional-fuelled vessels.
"Compared with conventional heavy fuel oil-fired vessels, the vessel is expected to reduce GHG and NOx emissions and significantly reduce SOx emissions through the use of LNG fuel," MOL said.
