Bulk Carrier Converted to Boxship for First Time in China
China has completed what is described as the world's first conversion of an 80,000 DWT bulk carrier into a container ship, as well as the largest bulk-to-container conversion project completed to date.
The conversion of the Guang Qi De Er Ta was completed on June 10 at Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard, China Classification Society (CCS) said in a press release on Monday.
The Kamsarmax bulker was originally built in 2012.
According to CCS, the six-month project transformed the vessel from a conventional bulk carrier into a 3,600 TEU container ship.
CCS said the project involved extensive structural modifications, including the conversion of seven cargo holds into 13 container bays fitted with cell guides, the installation of a new container lashing system and upgrades to supporting ship systems.
The vessel's wheelhouse was also raised to allow containers to be stacked on deck while maintaining visibility requirements.
The classification society said the project provides valuable experience for future large-scale vessel conversion projects.
It is unclear who will operate the vessel.
