Japanese shipping company NYK Line reported that low-GHG and alternative marine fuels accounted for 12.2% of its fuel utilisation in FY2025, with biofuels making up the largest share, followed by LNG.
The company’s Decarbonization Story – Progress Report 2026 published yesterday showed that biofuel consumption increased to 297,000 mt during the financial year, up from 251,000 mt in FY2024.
NYK estimated that low-GHG and alternative fuel use reduced emissions by 260,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in FY2025.
Biofuels accounted for an estimated 200,000-tonne reduction compared with an equivalent energy quantity of heavy fuel oil, with the savings verified through ISCC certificates.
The group operated 35 dual-fuel vessels in FY2025, up from 26 a year earlier, with LNG accounting for the majority of the fleet. The figures exclude LNG carriers and LNG-ready vessels under NYK’s reporting methodology.
NYK is also preparing for wider use of biofuels. In May 2026, it launched a 12-month trial using B100 biofuel derived primarily from used cooking oil on a pure car carrier. The trial aims to assess the effects of continuous use on engine performance and establish safe operating guidelines.
The company is also evaluating cashew nut shell liquid as a potential sustainable biofuel option and advancing the development of ammonia-fuelled vessels.
NYK aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, while expanding its use of lower-emission fuels and improving vessel and operational efficiency.
