MGC and Gold Hydrogen to Study Green Methanol Production in South Australia
Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC) and Australia's Gold Hydrogen have signed an MoU to assess the feasibility of producing green methanol on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula.
The project will evaluate the use of natural hydrogen from Gold Hydrogen's Ramsay Project as the primary feedstock, alongside regional renewable power and existing infrastructure, MGC said in a press release on Monday.
The agreement follows MGC's equity investment in Gold Hydrogen, supporting the potential commercial development of the natural hydrogen and helium project and a future green methanol business.
The companies plan to assess stages, with a preliminary feasibility study expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
The study is linked to production testing at Gold Hydrogen's natural hydrogen exploration well, which is scheduled to begin in late June.
The companies did not identify the intended end-use markets for the proposed green methanol project. However, methanol is seen as one of the more practical alternative fuels because it can be handled using relatively familiar infrastructure compared with some other emerging marine fuels.
“Through collaboration with Gold Hydrogen, MGC aims to realize the supply of green methanol using natural hydrogen, which has the potential to enable zero emissions, thereby accelerating the adoption of environmentally circular methanol across the methanol value chain and contributing to the realization of a sustainable society,” MGC said.
