Malaysian Authorities have detained two tugboats suspected of transporting and storing MGO worth an estimated RM 19.55 million ($4.97 million) without valid documents in eastern Johor waters.

The vessels were intercepted following intelligence gathering and monitoring of suspicious movements, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said in a social media post on Thursday

The first tugboat was detained about 1.5 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Bulat at around 10:50 PM, while the second was stopped about 40 minutes later nearby.

MMEA said both vessels were registered in Tanzania and operated by 10 Indonesian crew members.

Inspections found the vessels had allegedly failed to report their arrival in Malaysian waters. Officers also discovered cargo believed to be MGO without valid documents.

Investigators further found suspected modifications to the vessels’ water tanks, which were believed to have been converted into oil storage tanks.

The case is being investigated under Malaysia’s Customs Act 1967.
