ABB Wins Electric Tug Propulsion Contract in India
Technology company ABB has won a contract from India's Cochin Shipyard to supply power and propulsion systems for two electric harbour tugs being built for Polestar Maritime.
The vessels are due for delivery in 2027 and will operate at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority as part of phase 1 of India's green tug transition programme, ABB said in an email statement on Thursday.
The programme aims to replace conventional powered harbour tugs with cleaner alternatives in five phases between 2024 and 2040.
ABB's scope includes electrical, propulsion, automation and digitalisation systems.
Its onboard DC grid power platform and power and energy management system will help optimise battery use and improve operational efficiency.
The company will also provide its remote diagnostic system to support condition monitoring and troubleshooting.
"ABB's proven systems and deep experience in this space made them the clear choice," Shri Jose VJ, chairman and managing director of Cochin Shipyard, said.
