French container shipping firm CMA CGM has launched a fully electric barge in Vietnam with footwear company Nike and local port and logistics operator Gemadept.
The barge will connect Nike’s inland drop-off location in Ho Chi Minh City with Gemalink deep-sea terminal in Cai Mep, covering a 180 km round trip.
The vessel will be powered by batteries charged using renewable electricity from a dedicated solar farm.
The barge is expected to avoid around 778 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. It is designed to carry more than 50,000 TEUs a year, offering a lower-carbon alternative to road transport.
