World's First Ammonia-Fuelled VLAC Set to Bunker Green Ammonia in Ulsan
Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has named the world's first ammonia dual-fuel very large ammonia carrier (VLAC), with green ammonia bunkering planned at a terminal in Ulsan, South Korea.
The 93,000 m3 vessel, Terra Clove, was built by South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and is powered by the first Everllence ammonia dual-fuel two-stroke engine, EPS said in a press release today.
The vessel can run on ammonia or conventional marine fuels.
Using green ammonia produced with renewable energy could significantly reduce its lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.
The green ammonia will be supplied by LOTTE Fine Chemical at its terminal in Ulsan. Produced by Envision Energy, it will be used for the vessel's ammonia-burning trials.
“The vessel is the result of a collaboration formalised in September 2023, when EPS joined HHI, Everllence, MPA and ABS to advance the development of ammonia dual-fuel vessels and the wider capabilities required for their safe operation,” EPS said.
Ammonia-fuelled oceangoing vessels are beginning to enter the global fleet, with maritime firm Exmar taking delivery of the first such vessel earlier this year.
Earlier this month, CMB.TECH's ammonia-fuelled bulker also took on green ammonia in China, marking another step towards the use of ammonia as a marine fuel.
