Kamei Conducts Japan's First Ship-to-Ship HVO100 Biofuel Supply
Japan-based Kamei Corporation has conducted what it described as Japan’s first ship-to-ship supply of 100% hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO 100) marine fuel at Keihin Port.
The company supplied “Susteo”, a next-generation biodiesel fuel developed by Tokyo-based biofuel producer Euglena, to ship in port using a bunker vessel, Kamei said in a press release on Thursday.
The fuel is derived from used cooking oil and other feedstocks.
Because HVO is classified as a class II petroleum product in Japan, the fuel can be transported using conventional bunker vessels and used in existing marine diesel engines without modification.
The project is part of a Tokyo Metropolitan Government-backed new energy technology development support programme for the fiscal year 2024.
Kamei said it will work with Euglena to establish a stable supply chain for the fuel and build operational experience ahead of wider deployment.
