Construction Begins on ESL Shipping's First Methanol-Powered Ship
Construction has begun on the first methanol-powered green handy vessel for dry bulk operator ESL Shipping.
A steel-cutting ceremony was held on June 1 at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, China, ESL said in a press release on Monday.
The 17,000 DWT ships are being designed to operate on green methanol and renewable diesel from delivery.
The vessels will also feature electric cranes, a battery-hybrid system, shore power connectivity and heat pumps to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.
China Merchants Jinling Shipyard previously built ESL Shipping's LNG-fuelled vessels Viikki and Haaga.
The first green handy vessel is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2027, with all four ships expected to be delivered by the first half of 2028.
