Zhoushan in eastern China’s Zhejiang province is expanding the use of shore power systems at ports and terminals as part of efforts to reduce shipping emissions.

On May 9, the vessel Tong Da 2 connected to the shore power system at Sanjiang Passenger Terminal after arriving at berth, according to media outlet China Daily report on Monday.

A shore power system allows vessels to switch off auxiliary engines and connect to onshore electricity while docked, lowering bunker fuel use, noise and air pollution.

Zhoushan Tongda Ocean Shipping said shore power reduces emissions by replacing onboard generators during port calls.

More than 900 shore power systems have also been installed at shipbuilding and repair docks.

Zhoushan’s passenger and cargo terminals provided shore power services for 49,600 vessel calls in 2025, with total electricity use reaching 9.34 million kWh, up nearly 30% year-on-year.
