Vard to Construct Battery-Hybrid Deep-Sea Research Vessel
Norway-based shipbuilder Vard has won a contract from ocean research organisation Inkfish for the design and construction of a hybrid-battery new deep-sea research vessel.
The order, valued at nearly €700 million, is the largest ever secured by Vard for a single vessel and the largest order of its kind for a Norwegian shipyard, Vard said in a recent LinkedIn post.
The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2030.
Designed by Vard Design in Aalesund in collaboration with Inkfish, the 162 m vessel will support seafloor mapping, coring and sampling, submarine operations and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) activities at depths of up to 11,000 m.
The ship will be equipped with one of the largest battery installations ever fitted on a vessel, alongside a battery-hybrid propulsion system combining DC technology and battery solutions.
Vard said the vessel will also feature advanced laboratories, scientific workspaces and accommodation for up to 130 crew members and researchers.
