MSC Controls Nearly Half of North Europe-Mediterranean Container Capacity
Container shipping company MSC controls nearly half of all container ship capacity operating between North Europe and the Mediterranean, according to sector specialist Alphaliner.
The carrier holds a 45.5% share of the trade lane’s deployed capacity as of May 1, well above its 21.6% share of global container capacity, Alphaliner said in an emailed report on Tuesday.
Alphaliner said only 10 carriers currently operate regular liner services on the route.
Major operators, including MSC, A.P Moller Maersk, CMA CGM, Cosco Shipping Lines, ONE, ZIM and Hapag-Lloyd, account for more than 97% of total capacity in the market.
MSC deploys around one-third of its regional capacity on its Levante Express service linking North Europe with the Eastern Mediterranean.
Meanwhile, Maersk is preparing to launch its new Baltic Sea service in June, which is expected to lift its market share from 14% to 19%.
