Short sea operator Grimaldi Group has ordered new ferries with scrubbers installed as well as a range of other fuel-saving features.

In addition to the exhaust abatement units, or scrubbers, the six new ferries on order will have friction-reducing air lubrication systems, hydrodnamic-shaped hulls, solar panels and battery power for at berth operating, according to maritime news provider Lloyd's List.

The order carries an option for four more ships, the report said.

The newbuildings are to operate on shortsea European trades, which have frequent port calls and strict environmental regulations.

The Grimaldi Group controls a 114-strong fleet comprising shortsea and deepsea vessels.
